Every year the Scottish Terrier Club of England held their Championship Show in Polesworth, app. 50km North from Birmingham. This event is the annual highlight of one of the oldest Scottie clubs in Great Britain.

When we arrived in the morning the lawn in front of the hall was untouched. But this rapidly changed: Many busy helpers built up the ring. The club table and the impressive trophe table were built up as well.

More and more exhibitors and dogs arrive. Some great personalities are present. The ambiance is easy but still pleasing discreet - we (Germans) would call it „very British“.

During the day Helma and I are often asked if we feel good. Yes, we do indeed. We really enjoy the whole day! Again and again I have to smile. Here the show is running much more smooth than ours use to do at "oversea". No hectic pace, no emotional releases, always fair applause. Of course, there also is whispering like everywhere - but just discreet.

Yesterday in Windsor my German friends Nicole and Petra (who spent the rest of the weekend in London) said, in England they would also dare, showing a dog in the ring because here it seems to be much more relaxed than at home. Nobody cares in which order the dogs stand in the ring. No matter if the judge would like to see „up and down please“ or „triangle please“, a figure more like an egg is shown. A good overall impression does not seem to be that important.

But for me as a breeder it is most important to see as many as possible Scotties from different English blood lines, even though many English dogs are now influenced by wheaten gens from America.

At the same time of course I am finally proud to have the possibility to show my dogs in England.

Most of the time the weather was lovely. There was just one heavy shower inbetween. Everybody tried to hide everything under umbrellas and covers - mostly without success. But after a short while the sun came back and the judging continued. Before the end of the show also the padded chairs around the ring dryed up.

The judges for the annual Championship Shows are elected by the members of the club for several years in advance. For example: This year the judge for the show in 2012 was elected, 3 candidates were on offer. The majority of votes went to Mrs. Alison Kenny (Millingford).

The actual show was judged by Mrs. Jean Green, Kennel Ionascot (in the picture on the right). She is a member of the STC since 1981.

In the picture on the left: Mr. John Gaskell (Mayson), president of the STC. He was always busy or I always were on the wrong place. So unfortunatley I was not able to take a better picture of him.
