Great Britain - the origin of our Scottish Terriers!

Every year in July the "Windsor General Championship Show", a 4 day all breed show, is held not far from Windsor Castle. Many years back I visited this wonderful show as a spectator. That time I met Betty Penn-Bull and I also was really impressed by the young Ch. Mistical Merry Monarch at Micanda.

2009 Q and Ruby are prepared to come to England. Well - I could now show them at Windsor - should I - yes, of course!

I think some of my friends took over my enthusiasm. :-) Nicole Meissner and Petra Detemple came by plane and at the same time used the possibility to spend a long weekend visiting London. Helma, the dogs and I drove by car.

The venue is huge. The show ground with rings, tents and shops are built quite compact. But next to it there is a real big camping site. Many exhibitors seam to have settled for a longer time. :-)

Beside the - also huge - parking ground, there also is a big Cricket field, where the normal training is continued during the show.

The big rings are partially canopied. The boxes are located in big tents. But as it is a sunny day, it's quite hot inside. But between the rings there is room enough for the exhibitors. The small tents we usually have on shows at home are not common over here. So we did not dare bringing one. Here the dogs boxes usually are protected by cooling blankets. Sometimes also small ventilators are used to get fresh air into the boxes.

The whole show is very well organised.

In England the class system is completely different, as the British Kennel Club is not associated to the FCI.

Definition of classes:

Puppy Class: For dogs from 6 to 12 months.

Junior Class: For dogs from 6 to 18 months.

Post Graduate Class: For dogs that have not yet won a CC (or CAC in another Country) or that have not won their class for more than 5 times on Championship Shows (from Post Graduate-, Limit- or Open Class).

Limit Class: For dogs that have not yet gained an adult Champion title or that have not won their class more than 7 times on Championship Shows (from Limit- or Open Class).

Open Class: Open for all dogs of the breed, that are permitted to participate.

Veteran Class: For dogs from 7 years and older.

It is possible to enter a dog in several classes.

Champions can only be shown in Open- or later on in Veteran Class. The Reserve CC is not being upgraded in case the CC winner already is a Champion (as it is often the case in FCI countries).

By the way: In England it is absolutely common to continue showing a dog after gaining his title, sometimes for several years. So a young dogs usually has to beat several Champions to be able to gain a CC.

My personal opinion: I like this system very much. In Germany (and in some other countries) very often dogs disappear from the ring after gaining the relevant title.

At Windsor the Scotties were judged by Clair Chapman (Berrybreeze).

She has already bred some Champions: Ch. Berrybreeze Fire Cracker, her son Ch. Berrybreeze Ilumination (Crufts CC Winner 2006) and her gandson Ch. Berrybreeze Reckless Eric (Crufts Res. CC Winner 2008).

Berrybreeze Supertramp, daughter of Reckless Eric, won the Post Graduate Class with 14 dogs at Crufts 2009. Her litterbrother J. Ch. Berrybreeze Rock the World is living in Germany at the Arabella's Scotties.

Clair Chapman has judged the Scotties several times at different occasions. At Windsor it was the first time for her to award CC.

Windsor is situated close to London with the Themse idyllically flowing through the little town.

After the show we met Petra's sister and her husband for a drink. They live not far from London and Petra and Nicole spent the rest of the long weekend with them.

Helma and I drove towards Polesworth where the Scottish Terrier club of England held their annual Ch. Schow next day.
