Holidays in Henne Strand in house "La Cabina"

First there was the plan to visite a show in Denmark with our Scotties. Helma van Wieringen (owner of Ch. Sir Darnley's Mylord Mortimer and Ch. Sir Darnley's Noble Nicolson) and I decided to enter for the double show at the end of April Hillerød and Frederiksværk.

Then we found out that we both would have some free time around the shows. So it was decided to spend a one weeks holiday at the Danish West Coast additionally.

On 25.04. we arrived in Henne Strand around noon. Lovely weather! We spent the afternoon by sunbathing on the terrace of our summer residence.

Kylie and Mortimer are sitting next to us. As usual Nellie investigates the area around the house.
Everything is marvelous!

But suddenly Nellie sits under the chair She looks quite apathetic and there is a swelling above her nose. Propably she was sting by a bumble-bee - or not? Well, wait and see.

After a short while the whole forface is swollen. Nellie snifs and really does not feel well. I try to cool the swelling but it seams that this does not help because it is painful. Vet? .... Yes, hurry to the next vet!!!

On the phone the vets secretary assumes that Nellie might be bit by a snake. A snake? No, impossible!

By "low level flight" we reach Nørre Nebel where the next vet surgery is located. Shortly the vet examines Nellie's forface and diagnoses a bite of a European viper (or crossed viper)!

Pardon? This is impossible, we have not seen any snake - we are still sceptical! How sure you are that is was a crossed viper (the most poisened snake in North Europe)? Ok, 99% should be enough! Now we trust the vets diagnostic.

The vet informs us that snake-bites are quite often at present. This is caused by the unsual warm weather. So the snakes are active earlier than normal but they are not as quick as they are in the summertime. As snakes are hematocryal they surch for sunny places to warm up their body.

We rarely see these snakes when we walk around because they are warned by vibrations in the ground caused by our steps. But they cannot feel the steps of a small dog sniffing around. And when the snake mentions the dog too late to escape, it decides do defend itself.

The smaller and weaker the affected organism, the more dangerous is the poisons impact. Normally the snake uses his toxin to kill mouses or frogs. The worst case would be an acute kidney failure. But according to the vet this would occur whithin app. 30 minutes after the bit. Beside that it is highly painful and the swelling is extremely unpleasant.

Thank God Nellie does not show any signs of organ failure. She receives cortisone and a pain killer to ease the symptoms. Antiserum is mostly not useful because the risk of an allergic shock is too big. More informations about the European viper can be found in Wikipedia Encyclopedia.

Luckily Nellie recovered really quick. In the evening she again was able to drink and eat. Next day she still was a bit tired but the swelling was already nearly gone.

Because off our snake adventure we only made shorter walks in the area within the next days. Especially Helma payed attention that the dogs did not leave the ways.

But no problem, our favourite place was the sunny terrace anyway. We loved to relaxe here!

The evenings were spent inside the cosy house.

This little nosy bird came very close to our terrace.

Also the dogs enjoyed the benefits of the holiday ambiance.

Just a last finishing before we leave towards Hillerød the next morning.

The distance between Henne Strand on the west coast and the far east coast of Denmark is app. 350 km. There is Hillerød, located a bit north from København. It is a nice tour through the cosy Danish countryside from Jylland over Fyn to Sjælland. Years back we had to use the ferry from Fyn to Sjælland. Today both islands are connected by a bridge of more than 20km length.

The all breed CACIB show in Hillerød was held in spacious halls.  For a Danish show the entry of 40 Scotties was high but not unusual.

Nearly all Scotties came from Denmark. The only external exhigitors were Christina Hüttner from Sweden (Kennel Dundee), Helma van Wieringen from the Netherlands and me.

It was the same friendly ambiance that I remember from the Danish shows I visited in the 80ties and 90ties.

The Danish show system is different to ours. The competition for best male and best female is separated. The best 1 to 4 dogs and bitches are placed here. I will explain this more detailed in the show report.

The Scotties were judged by Veli-Pekka Kumpumäkki from Finland. His kennel Perhaps is well known for Scotties and Westies.

Our results:

Multi Ch. Sir Darnley's Mylord Mortimer

Ch. Sir Darnley's Mylord Mortimer (Owner: Helma van Wieringen, NL)
Open class male: V1 (10 dogs entered), best male no.2, CAC, Res. CACIB

Ch. Sir Darnley's Nosy Nellie
Open class female: V2 (7 dogs entered), best female no.3

Ch. Sir Darnley's Kiss-Curl Kylie
Champion class female: V2 (6 dogs entered), Veteran class: V1, 2nd. Veteran in show

After the show we went to a Bed + Breakfast hotel on a farm just between Hillerød and Frederiksværk.

It was a very private atmosphere where we had two lovely rooms to relax.

Next day, after a very good breakfast we went to the  Terrier show with CAC in Frederiksværk.

Here the Scotties were judged outside. We were just lucky that we had picked up a show tent for my friend  Gerda van Stuivenberg (Kennel From Dash Mountain Farm's, NL). So we decided to test the new tent in order that our dogs could stay in the shaddow.

Again the Danish exhibitors were very helpful. Several helped us to build up the tent and also afterwards to pack everything!

Gererally there was a high collegiality between all Scottie people. They were all standing together and helped eachother.

This time the judge came from Sweden. 42 Scotties wered entered for Mrs. Ann-Christin Molin.

Our results here:

Ch. Sir Darnley's Mylord Mortimer (Owner: Helma van Wieringen, NL)
Open class male: V2 (7 dogs entere), best male no.2

Ch. Sir Darnley's Nosy Nellie
Open class female: V3 (9 dogs entered)

Ch. Sir Darnley's Kiss-Curl Kylie
Veteran class: V1, Best Veteran in Schau

A detailled report with all results of both shows will later be installed  =>HERE<=. I am still working on it. I "just" have to insert the pictures.

Sunday evening we came back to Henne Strand.

Now we had another 3 days to enjoy the sanddunes, the beach and our terrace.

Also Mortimer and Helma enjoyed their stay in Henne Strand. I would think that this was not their last visite in Denmark.
